About Us

Smithson Farms is a family farming operation located south of LaPlata, Missouri.  In the 1920's Great Grandpa Daniel Smithson moved from Iowa to a farm north of Atlanta, Missouri in Macon County.  Grandpa Walliss Smithson purchased the current 'Home' farm in the early 40's.  Sheryl Smithson was born in the house on the 'Home' farm where he still lives today and raised a family.  The 'Home' farm is where Danny grew up, until off to college, then immediately returning to the LaPlata area to farm full time.

Our Business - Fulltime Farming

Our living is derived from the farm where we raise corn, beans, and wheat on 2000+ acres of owned and rented ground.  We are so blessed to have wonderful landlords to work with and are very thankful for the 20+ landlords that we have!  From 20 acres on up to 500 acres, and from 1 year up to the 30th year of renting land from the same family, we are Thankful for each and every one of them!   Without the landlords, we couldn't do what we do!!!

Along with the row crops we have a commercal cow/calf operation running over 200 cows, mostly owned and some partnered.  In 2006 we started in the Black Hereford business with 1 bull and 2 females.  A little over a year and a half later, we have grown the herd to around 90 females.

As interest and demand has grown nationwide, we have added Hereford and F1 females to be in a position to supply quality seedstock.  Some of our females have come from reputable operations such as Oleen Bros. and Jamison Herefords both from Kansas; Rausch Herefords, South Dakota; Reynolds Herefords and Sweiger Bros. both from Missouri.

Since the commercial cattleman mindset is embedded in me, the Hereford herd is not given much, if any, special attention compared to the commercial cows.  Cows are expected to calve easy, breed back and raise a calf.  The bulls and cows are in there 'working clothes' as most the pictures on this website will show.

My goal is to raise efficient and productive cattle that will go out and work for the commercial and registered cowman alike, and not just sell an animal because he's black.  If an animal is not good enough for our commercial or partnership herds, then it's not good enough to sell.

From a family farm that has been blessed by God and grown over the years based on honesty and trust, I look forward to meeting you and providing you with quality Black Hereford genetics.

Sincerely,

Danny Smithson

Who We Are

Faith and Family is a very important part of Smithson Farms.  On Sundays, you'll find us gathered around a kitchen table or BBQ after Church services.  Normally, the tractors, planters, combine and trucks are stopped for a day of rest!  God has blessed us!
